Scottsdale has much to offer as an urban getaway, but for those more naturally inclined it also offers the trail of Pinnacle Peak Park, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the Sonoran Desert.
For Your Safety
When hiking any trails in Scottsdale parks, it is recommended that you bring a hat, sunscreen, shoes with good tread and at least a quart of water to drink. Keep in mind that temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit from April to November.
Pay attention to what’s around you as you hike and plan to take at least two hours to complete the trail. If you meet with any snakes, insects or spiders on the trail, do not panic. They are rarely aggressive and should leave you alone if you give them plenty of space.
Tours
Take a tour to learn more about the Sonoran Desert. Tourists will be taught facts about Pinnacle Peak Park’s geology, wildlife and plant life, and about the history of the Hohokam.
Tours start at 10 a.m. and last two hours, and they are offered on Fridays and Sundays from November to March. They are not, however, held on holidays, holiday weekends or on days with bad weather. No registration is required, but tours are limited to 20 participants.
Full Moon Hikes
What is more awe-inspiring than being surrounded by nature on a guided hike, under the moon and stars? It’ll make for an unforgettable evening, especially if you share it with someone. The hike takes you to the Grandview area while the moon rises and lasts about an hour and half. Registration is required to attend. Hikes will be canceled if the skies are rainy or overcast, so be sure to call the afternoon of the hike to confirm if it’s still on.
Astronomy Evenings
Want the stars without all the hiking? Astronomy Evenings are open to everybody over the age of eight, and attendees will learn about planets, star systems, and more in the night sky. The evening lasts about an hour and a half, and registration is required. As with full moon hikes, astronomy evenings will be canceled if the skies are rainy or overcast, so call the afternoon of to confirm.
Location and Hours of Operation
Hikers and nature enthusiasts will find Pinnacle Peak Park at 26802 N. 102nd Way. Pinnacle Peak Park’s hours change on the first, the fifteenth, and occasionally the seventh of every month so be sure to doublecheck what they are before you start exploring. As a rough rule, hours are longer in the summer months and shorter in the winter months.
