Chaparral Park

Chaparral Park in Scottsdale is a fantastic spot for lakeside picnics, getting your steps in, or simply taking in some fresh air with the family. The park is spread out over 100 acres and features a stunning lake for fishing and boating, a children’s playground, swimming pool, walking and biking trails, and an expansive dog park. For the athletes, there are also six ball fields, two volleyball courts, three soccer fields, and two half-court basketball courts. You’ll find all the playground essentials like swings, slides, monkey bars, and merry-go-rounds, but what makes the playground at Chaparral Park stand out is its accessibility. There are two inclusive swings and one two-person swing in addition to playground swing set. The side-by-side slide is built to allow parents or caregivers to slide safely alongside a child. The best part? The playground is covered!

Fish for Trout at the Lake

Cast your line at the lake in Chaparral Park in Scottsdale and try your luck for catfish, trout, bass, and sunfish. Set in the heart of the park, the lake is the perfect spot for unwinding with a bit of fishing. Set your boat out into the water from the boat ramp, or stick to land at the fishing pier.

Play Time at the Dog Park

Bringing your furry friend along to Scottsdale? The dog park at Chaparral Park in Scottsdale is a local favorite for play time with pups. There are two sections, one for more active play and one for more passive dogs, with water fountains, obstacle areas, and waste stations throughout the park.

Work up an appetite with the 10-station exercise equipment set up along the walking loop, featuring knee lifts, bench leg raises, bench curls, pull up bars, and vault bars. Then fire up the grill in the picnic areas dotted throughout the park, with two shady ramadas available for reservation.

Catch a Ball Game

Work on your jump shot on the basketball courts or practice your spike on the volleyball courts. The ball fields are popular for local softball leagues in the evenings, and the soccer fields often host youth games. Live like a local and cheer on your favorite team!

How to Get to Chaparral Park

Chaparral Park is located just northeast of central Scottsdale, between Chaparral and McDonald Roads. It’s easily accessible by car, with plenty of parking available. The park is open daily from sunrise to 10:30 p.m., and the dog park closes at 10 p.m.

Camelback Mountain

Camelback Mountain is one of the most recognized area landmarks. With an elevation of 2,700 feet, it is an excellent venue for a hike or climb. In fact, hiking Camelback is considered one of the top 10 things to do in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area. There are two main trails/climbs — Cholla and Echo Canyon. Please be advised that these hikes and climbs are not generally considered “easy” or beginner level.

Papago Park

Papago Park is a municipal park that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There is plenty to do in this gorgeous park including hiking, fishing and even golfing on the Papago Golf Course.

Hole in the Rock

Hole in the Rock is a wonderful destination for those wanting to see a terrific example of Arizona Red Rock. This is a natural geological formation located in Papago Park. This formation is actually a series of openings eroded into a small red stone hill. The openings and main chamber are accessible via a smoothly ascending path that passes behind the hill.

Taliesin West

Taliesin West was the winter home and school of Frank Lloyd Wright from 1937 until his death in 1959. Currently, it is the main campus of The School of Architecture at Taliesin and also houses the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. It is open to the public for tours, where you’ll be taken through indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as Wright’s private quarters, the gracious “Garden Room”, the drafting room and more.
