Scottsdale is an outdoors person’s paradise. Not only are there dozens of hiking rails and bodies of water for sports, but you can find things to do for people of all ages and interests. Let’s check out some of the top activities in Scottsdale for those who love the great outdoors and can’t get enough!
Hiking
Scottdale has no shortage of hiking trails. We recommend a few that are unforgettable experiences during your stay in the beautiful and nature-influenced town of Scottsdale, AZ. First, head to Camelback Mountain early in the day to catch sunrise at the summit. This incredible hike is going to be one of the best experiences from your trip, as you can see far across the desert and feel good about getting in 10,000 steps before breakfast! Take the Echo Canyon trail if you want a more gradual path or try the Cholla Trail for an adrenaline-pumping trail that takes you quickly high above the treetops down below.
Second, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is home to dozens of hiking trails that range from easy nature walks to lung-busting peak hikes. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve has over 30,000 acres of wilderness included, featuring over 200 miles of hiking trails, cacti, flowers, and wildlife that is sure to keep you on your toes. We recommend taking one of the high trails or going to one of the climbing areas to really push your limits.
Next, we love doing the Pinnacle Peak Summit Trail. Pinnacle Peak Trail in North Scottsdale is easy to get to and provides expansive views of the trees, desert, and valley far below you. The roundtrip of the trail is just 3.5 miles, meaning runners can do this in 30 minutes and hikers can do this in 90 minutes or less. We love doing this early in the morning for some exercise!
Lastly, head to Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve to take your kids on the Bajada Nature Trail. If you are new to hiking, or you are traveling with older adults or young children, this is a great option for an easy path. You can still get outside, feel the wind in your hair, and feel the sun on your face as you meander along this flat and easy nature trail. Learn about the plants, wildlife, geology, and environment of the Sonoran Desert and the McDowell Mountains as you enjoy this easy and short ½ mile loop hike.
Kayaking
For the adventurous and active souls, kayaking on the Lower Salt River is one of the top outdoor activities in Scottsdale, AZ. The Lower Salt River is a lush green space that features tons of animals, marine life, and pristine views that are far reaching throughout the barren desert landscape. Kayaking here is a great way to see other parts of the Sonoran Desert you wouldn’t see otherwise, with a local and professional guide that can tailor the trip to your skill and comfort level.
Educational Tour
Although going on an educational tour may not seem like exactly what you want to do during your vacation, taking a guided tour through the desert can be a great way to learn about the flora and fauna to have a fun and educational afternoon with your kids. The desert is filled with unique plants and wildlife that you won’t find elsewhere — that is why going on a tour with a knowledgeable local can be the perfect way to learn things you won’t find anywhere else in the entire state (or country).
Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride
If you have a head for heights, we have the ideal excursion for you. Soar high above the clouds and the cacti down below as you slowly rise in a hot air balloon. Take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise to see the sun come up over the desert landscape, view the mountain silhouettes, and glance at the rocky landscapes down below. The tours you can book offer breakfast and picture-taking opportunities before and after your hot air balloon ride!
Open-Air Jeep Ride
Another fun activity for outdoors people is taking an open-air jeep ride through the 4×4 trails from a local tour group, bringing you quickly through the dirt trails on a Jeep or ATV. Feel the wind go through your hair and the breeze on your face as you whip around corners and take a tour with a professional tour guide. This is great for adrenaline junkies who want to see the desert at faster speeds!
Once you’re done with your fun-filled day out in the sunshine, head to your accommodation from Scottsdale Rentals to chill out, watch a movie with your guests, and enjoy a restful night of sleep. We guarantee you will have an exciting and nature-inspired time in the beautiful desert surrounding Scottsdale, AZ.
